The Historian's Craft: Teacher of History (KS3-5) - Outstanding Southampton School
Are you a meticulous and intellectually curious Teacher of History who thrives on guiding students through the complexities of historical evidence and argument? Our Outstanding mixed secondary school in Southampton is seeking an incisive and dedicated educator to join our thriving History department from September 2025.
If you are driven by a desire to equip students with the core skills of a historian – critical analysis, nuanced interpretation, and robust argumentation – across Key Stages 3, 4, and 5, then this role is ideal. Our school is celebrated for its academic rigour and its commitment to developing independent learners who can confidently engage with diverse historical sources, question established narratives, and formulate their own evidence-based conclusions. You will foster a dynamic classroom where students actively engage in historical debates, dissect primary and secondary accounts, and understand the subjective nature of historical interpretation. We are looking for someone who can inspire students to become discerning and analytical thinkers about the past.
The ideal candidate will:
* Hold Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a strong degree in History, with expertise in various historical methodologies.
* Be adept at designing and delivering source-rich lessons that challenge students to critically evaluate evidence and understand historiography.
* Actively contribute to our vibrant school culture, perhaps by running a debating society, a historical research club, or facilitating student presentations on complex historical topics.
* Be dedicated to continuous professional development, staying abreast of new historical research and pedagogical approaches to source-based learning.
* Demonstrate excellent classroom management, fostering an environment of respectful intellectual inquiry and rigorous academic discussion.
