Job Description:
We are seeking a passionate and experienced Head of English (or English Lead) to join a successful secondary school in Braintree from September. This is an exciting opportunity for an outstanding HOD English professional, or an aspiring English Department Lead, to lead and inspire an established team.
As Head of English, you will play a pivotal role in driving teaching and learning across all Key Stages, leading a forward-thinking English department. This role sits on the Leadership Scale (L4–L8) to reflect the responsibility and impact of the position.
Key Responsibilities:

Provide strategic leadership as Head of English / HOD English, ensuring high standards of teaching and learning
*
Line-manage and mentor a team of English teachers as English Department Lead
*
Lead the development of creative and challenging schemes of work across the department
*
Champion pupil progress and achievement in English
*
Represent the faculty in leadership meetings as Head of English Faculty
*
Oversee the planning and delivery of the English curriculum as English Lead
*
Promote whole-school literacy as Head of English and Literacy
*
Support and develop NQTs and ECTs within the department
*
Drive a culture of high expectations and academic excellence
Ideal Candidate:
*
QTS / Qualified Teacher Status is essential
*
Proven experience as a Head of English, English Lead, HOD English, or readiness to step into a leadership role
*
Strong track record of improving outcomes in English
*
Excellent leadership, interpersonal, and organisational skills
*
Passion for English and a commitment to student success
