A prestigious independent day and boarding school located just outside Taunton is seeking a passionate and experienced Head of Music to lead its vibrant and well-established Music Department from September 2025. This is an exceptional opportunity for a dynamic educator to shape the musical life of the school, overseeing both academic and co-curricular provision.
You will lead a team of visiting music teachers, coordinate ensembles, and direct performances that range from chamber concerts to large-scale musicals. A deep understanding of music education from KS3 through to A-Level is essential, along with the vision to continue growing the school’s musical reputation locally and nationally.
Key Responsibilities

Deliver outstanding classroom music lessons from Years 7–13
*
Lead, organise and direct ensembles, choirs, and orchestras
*
Oversee preparation for music examinations (GCSE, A-Level, ABRSM, Trinity)
*
Manage department budget, resources, and a team of peripatetic teachers
*
Lead the school’s musical programme, including concerts, tours, and recordings
*
Foster a love of music throughout the school and local community
Ideal Candidate
*
Degree in Music with PGCE and QTS
*
Experience leading a music department or taking on departmental responsibilities
*
Strong keyboard/piano or conducting skills preferred
*
Outstanding communication and team leadership
