Job Description

HSE Performance Coach | Civil Engineering & Utilities

We are recruiting for an HSE Performance Coach to join a well-established civil engineering business operating across the water and utilities sector.

This is quite different from a traditional HSE position. The focus is very much on coaching, engaging with site teams, improving performance and helping people understand the reasons behind good safety practice, rather than simply policing compliance.

The business is open to candidates from different backgrounds.

You may already have experience within HSE, utilities, civil engineering or service avoidance and have the communication and people skills to develop into a coaching role.

Alternatively, you may come from a strong coaching, training or operational background and have the ability to learn and understand the technical aspects of civil engineering and utilities.

You do not necessarily need to arrive with both skill sets. What is important is your ability to engage with people, challenge constructively, solve problems and quickly grasp technical concepts.

The role will involve:

• Coaching and supporting operational teams to improve HSE performance

• Working predominantly on site across London and the Southern Counties

• Responding to incidents and working with teams to understand what happened and prevent recurrence

• Supporting and improving service avoidance and safe working around underground services

• Developing an understanding of CAT & Genny and safe excavation practices

• Reviewing and managing HSE performance data through Power BI

• Identifying trends and turning data into meaningful actions and improvements

• Supporting behavioural change and continuous improvement across projects

• Working closely with site teams to identify practical solutions to operational safety challenges

We are particularly interested in people who can demonstrate:

• Strong coaching, training or mentoring capability

• Excellent communication and influencing skills

• Strong problem-solving ability

• Confidence working with operational and site-based teams

• Experience responding to incidents or working in operational risk environments

• The ability to challenge people constructively and build credibility

• The ability to understand and communicate technical concepts

• Experience using data to identify trends and drive improvement

• Power BI experience or the ability to quickly develop this capability

Experience within civil engineering, utilities, HSE or service avoidance would be beneficial, but we are also interested in candidates from strong operational, coaching and training backgrounds who can demonstrate relevant transferable skills.

Candidates with Armed Forces, emergency services or other operational backgrounds may also have highly transferable experience for this position.

Salary: £39,000 – £54,000 depending on experience
