Are you a knowledgeable and qualified Equine Specialist ready to harness the therapeutic power of working with horses to re-engage vulnerable young people?
We are seeking a dedicated Equine Instructor or Teacher to lead our specialised Horse/Equine Studies provision within our Alternative Provision (AP) in Accrington. This unique role involves planning and delivering practical, hands-on sessions covering horse care, handling, riding (where applicable), and stable management. You will be instrumental in using these activities to improve the Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) and educational outcomes of students facing complex barriers to learning.
The Role: Therapeutic Equine Education
This position blends vocational teaching, animal care, and essential pastoral support. You will be responsible for:
Curriculum Delivery: Planning, preparing, and delivering engaging practical and theoretical lessons on horse care, equine health, handling techniques, and stable management.
Safety & Logistics: Ensuring stringent adherence to equine safety standards, health and safety procedures, and safeguarding protocols during all sessions, including necessary risk assessments for off-site visits.
Therapeutic Engagement: Using the structured routine and connection with horses to develop students' responsibility, empathy, confidence, self-regulation, and non-verbal communication skills.
Assessment and Progress: Tracking and reporting on students' progress in both technical equine skills and key life skills developed through the provision.
Accreditation: Working towards offering students relevant accreditations or vocational awards (e.g., BHS Stages, Pony Club, or other accredited qualifications).
What We Are Looking For
The ideal candidate will have a deep commitment to the therapeutic use of equine activities:
Equine Expertise: Proven, high-level experience and qualifications in horse care, handling, and instruction (e.g., BHS/Pony Club certifications, relevant vocational qualifications).
Instructional Ability: Significant, demonstrable experience as an Instructor, Youth Worker, or educator using equine activities in a therapeutic or educational setting.
SEMH Understanding: A strong empathetic understanding of the challenges faced by young people in AP settings (e.g., trauma, anxiety, challenging behaviour).
Safety Focused: Excellent understanding of equine welfare and safety protocols.
Essential: A valid driving licence and access to a vehicle (for transport to stable locations, if required).
