A leading contractor is seeking an experienced Freelance Instrumentation & Monitoring Engineer to support delivery on a multi-billion pound infrastructure scheme in the Midlands. This is a fantastic opportunity to join a high-profile project during a critical phase of works, supporting geotechnical and structural risk management across complex construction activities.
The successful candidate will play a key role in the implementation and management of instrumentation and monitoring systems associated with ground investigation, excavation support, earthworks, structures and adjacent asset protection.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate and oversee instrumentation and monitoring activities across the project.
- Review and interpret monitoring data to identify trends, anomalies and potential risks.
- Develop, implement and maintain monitoring plans in line with project and client requirements.
- Manage trigger levels, alert systems and escalation procedures.
- Liaise with geotechnical, temporary works and construction teams to ensure monitoring requirements are fully integrated into delivery.
- Support and review ground investigation activities and associated reporting.
- Ensure compliance with project specifications, industry standards and health & safety requirements.
- Prepare technical reports, dashboards and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.
- Coordinate specialist subcontractors undertaking instrumentation installation and maintenance.
Requirements
- Proven experience in instrumentation and monitoring on major civil engineering or infrastructure projects.
- Strong understanding of geotechnical engineering principles, ground investigation and asset protection.
- Experience managing trigger/action levels and interpreting real-time monitoring data.
- Familiarity with inclinometers, piezometers, settlement monitoring, vibration monitoring and automated monitoring systems.
- Ability to produce and review monitoring plans and technical documentation.
- Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
- Relevant engineering qualification (Civil, Geotechnical or related discipline).
Desirable
- Experience working on rail, tunnelling, highways or large-scale infrastructure schemes.
- Knowledge of observational methods and geotechnical risk management processes.
