Job Description
The Role
An exceptional opportunity has arisen for an experienced Waste Management professional to take on a key interim leadership role within a large and complex Waste Disposal Authority. It is a full time role on a temporary basis which is yet to be confirmed.
Managing services that process over 650,000 tonnes of waste annually, you’ll oversee operations across 21 Recycling Centres, 4 Transfer Stations, and multiple closed landfill sites, supported by a workforce of over 200 operational staff.
This role carries strategic responsibility for multi-million-pound contracts with a total value exceeding £1 billion, covering residual waste treatment, recycling, reuse and haulage. You’ll provide high-level leadership across operations, contract management, performance, and compliance — ensuring delivery of efficient, safe, and sustainable services.
Working as part of a collaborative leadership team, you’ll drive innovation and improvement to support local environmental goals and the transition to a low carbon, circular economy.
Key Responsibilities

Lead the safe and efficient management of all waste operations, including recycling centres, transfer stations and haulage.

Oversee all health and safety requirements, ensuring compliance for staff, contractors, and the public.
*
Manage and forecast large-scale budgets (approx. £90m per annum) ensuring financial control and delivery of savings.
*
Support and oversee major waste procurements and contribute operational expertise.
*
Ensure the compliant management of closed landfill sites and identify opportunities for revenue generation.
*
Lead a team of 7 direct reports and overall responsibility for 200+ operational staff.
*
Work collaboratively with Waste Collection Authorities and external partners to ensure effective service delivery.
*
Manage major contractors to ensure contractual performance, compliance and value for money.
*
Deliver strategic projects to improve efficiency, service quality and sustainability outcomes.
About You
*
Chartered Waste Manager (MCIWM) or equivalent professional qualification.
*
Significant experience in senior leadership within the waste or environmental services sector.
*
Strong understanding of waste legislation, policy and operational practices across treatment, recycling and disposal.
*
Proven experience in managing large budgets and delivering savings in complex service areas.
*
Skilled in contract and performance management of high-value contracts.
*
Strong leadership skills with experience managing large, multi-site operational teams.
*
Excellent communicator, able to engage effectively with members, officers, contractors and the public.
*
Committed to health, safety and environmental compliance across all operations.
*
Must be mobile throughout the operational area; a valid driving licence and access to a vehicle are essential for this role.
