The Role We are looking for an experienced and committed SEND Tribunal & Mediation Officer to join our team on an interim basis. You will play a key leadership role in managing and resolving disputes relating to Education, Health and Care (EHC) plans through mediation and tribunal processes. This is a pivotal position within our SEND service, where your expertise will contribute directly to better outcomes for children, young people, and families. Key Responsibilities As the Interim SEND Tribunal & Mediation Officer, you will: Lead tribunal and dispute resolution processes, including preparation and presentation of cases at SENDIST and engagement with the Local Government Ombudsman. Actively promote early resolution, supporting caseworkers to resolve disputes at the earliest opportunity through mediation and dialogue. Advise and attend resolution meetings with families and professionals, negotiating amendments to EHC plans where necessary. Engage with schools and multi-agency partners to promote best practice in person-centred planning and assessments. Support workforce development, identifying and addressing practice concerns across the SEND team in partnership with team managers. Manage responses to all formal and informal concerns, building capacity and confidence within the local SEND system. Act as a central point of contact for families and stakeholders during the tribunal and mediation process, ensuring clear communication and record keeping throughout. Produce reports and briefings, using data and insights to inform service improvements and support strategic planning. Contribute to policy development, promoting consistent and effective decision-making in EHC processes.About You We are looking for someone who is: Experienced in SEND legislation, tribunals, and dispute resolution processes. A confident communicator with strong negotiation and presentation skills, able to represent the Local Authority in formal legal settings. Proactive and solution-focused, with the ability to build constructive relationships with families and professionals. Highly organised, with excellent record-keeping and analytical skills.
