Lead Clinical Pharmacist – Maternity (Family Health) Band 8a Liverpool Women’s NHS Foundation Trust Part Time – 16hrs per week Base: Liverpool Accountable to: Chief Pharmacist | Responsible to: Deputy Chief Pharmacist The Role As the Lead Clinical Pharmacist for Maternity, you will be responsible for developing and delivering a highly specialised pharmacy service to maternity services across both hospital and community settings. You will work closely with consultants, midwives, obstetricians, and multidisciplinary colleagues to ensure the safe, evidence-based, and cost-effective use of medicines throughout antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal care. This role offers the opportunity to combine advanced clinical expertise with leadership, service development, and antimicrobial stewardship responsibilities. You will also act as Antibiotic Pharmacist for the Trust, collaborating with microbiology and infection control teams to update and embed the antimicrobial formulary, and to champion antimicrobial stewardship across all services. Key Responsibilities * Provide a highly specialist clinical pharmacy service to maternity services, including community midwives, antenatal clinic, fetal medicine, delivery suite, obstetric theatres, postnatal wards, and maternity assessment areas. * Act as an expert source of medicines information, advising staff on complex prescribing, dose adjustments, drug interactions, and safe administration practices. * Lead on medicines reconciliation, individual care plans, and evidence-based treatment protocols to optimise patient safety and outcomes. * Promote safe prescribing during breastfeeding, ensuring mothers receive accurate, up-to-date guidance and support. * Contribute toward rounds, clinical governance meetings, and the development of Patient Group Directions. * Monitor medicines expenditure, identify cost pressures, and implement strategies to deliver efficiency savings while safeguarding clinical quality. * Act as antimicrobial lead for the Trust pharmacy team, including formulary management, audit, and representation at local and regional forums. * Line manage and appraise junior pharmacists, ensuring effective training, mentorship, and service delivery. * Provide teaching and training to pharmacy staff, doctors, midwives, nurses, and other allied health professionals on safe medicines use in maternity. * Lead and contribute to clinical audit and research, aiming to present or publish findings annually. * Support the Deputy Chief Pharmacist in implementing safe medicines management and governance across the Trust. About You We are looking for a highly motivated pharmacist who combines advanced clinical knowledge with strong leadership skills and a genuine passion for improving maternity care. Essential criteria include: * Master’s degree in pharmacy (or equivalent) and GPhC registration. * Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy (or equivalent). * At least 5 years’ post-registration hospital experience across a range of clinical specialties. * Experience of delivering pharmacy services to maternity and/or women’s health. * Excellent communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills. * Ability to influence senior clinicians and lead service development. * Commitment to continuous professional development. Desirable attributes: * Independent Prescribing qualification. * Membership of RPS, UKCPA, or Faculty. * Previous experience as a specialist maternity/women’s health pharmacist. * Audit, research, and teaching experience. * Leadership or management training.
