Lead Engineer
Swindon
£60,000 - £70,000 + 10% Bonus
We are looking for an experienced Lead Engineer to join a specialist engineering and manufacturing business working on complex, bespoke machinery and equipment. This is a varied, customer-facing role for someone with a strong mechanical engineering background who enjoys being involved in the full engineering process.
Lead Engineer Roles and Responsibilities:
* Lead the technical direction and mechanical design of complex machinery and bespoke equipment
* Produce, check and approve detailed 3D CAD designs and 2D manufacturing drawings
* Produce and verify engineering calculations and review other engineers' technical solutions
* Ensure designs meet client specifications, standards, regulations and quality requirements
* Review designs for manufacture and contribute to manufacturability reviews
* Act as the technical authority and point of escalation for engineering queries
* Take ownership of projects from initial enquiry/order through to successful completion
* Coordinate engineering documentation, workshop activity, resources and project programmes
* Work closely with production to manage workshop loading, materials and resource requirements
* Monitor projects against cost, time and quality targets and manage risks and variances
* Work directly with customers to understand requirements and provide technical solutions
* Provide engineering input into bids, estimates, proposals and project budgets
* Lead, mentor and support the wider engineering team
* Get involved with hands-on mechanical build, assembly, fitting and machinery development
* Attend customer sites, meetings, conferences and exhibitions when required
Lead Engineer Ideal Candidate:
* Degree-level qualification in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent industry experience
* Strong mechanical engineering background with experience in complex machinery or bespoke equipment
* Experience leading engineering projects from concept through to completion
* Previous experience providing technical leadership, mentoring or line management
* Strong 3D CAD experience, ideally with Autodesk Inventor, and 2D manufacturing drawings
* Good knowledge of GD&T to BS8888:2020
* Experience producing and checking engineering calculations
* Strong understanding of design for manufacture and manufacturability
* Commercially aware with an understanding of project costs, budgets and resource planning
* Confident communicating technical information with customers, suppliers and internal teams
* Hands-on approach with mechanical assembly, fitting and engineering development
* Able to manage multiple projects, priorities and deadlines
* Willing to travel within the UK for customer visits, exhibitions and project meetings
