About the Setting
You will be working in an alternative education provision academy in Chesterfield, part of a trust dedicated to supporting young people who are at risk of permanent exclusion or who have already left mainstream education. The provision operates across several sites in North Derbyshire, covering Key Stages 1–4.
Here, small group settings, personalised learning programmes, and high adult to student ratios enable each pupil to re-engage with learning. The ethos is about helping students rebuild confidence, working toward reintegration or preparing them for their next steps in education or employment.
The Role
As a Secondary Learning Mentor, you’ll play a key role in helping students navigate their educational journey by:
* Providing 1:1 and small group support to help pupils with learning, emotional wellbeing, and behaviour management.
* Implementing positive behaviour strategies, de-escalation, and restorative practices to help students develop self-regulation, resilience and confidence.
* Collaborating with teaching staff, pastoral teams, and external support services to ensure consistency and a safe, structured, engaging learning environment.
* Promoting high expectations, respect, and trust across the academy community and helping young people to re-engage and move forward.
What You’ll Need
* Some experience (e.g. 3+ months) working with young people, ideally in settings with behavioural, emotional or social challenges.
* A calm, empathetic, and resilient approach, especially when supporting pupils through difficult moments.
* A strong commitment to helping young people overcome barriers to learning and reach their potential.
What You’ll Get
* Equal pay to permanent staff in the same role after 13 weeks.
* DBS refund after 20 working days.
* Free CPD opportunities via The National College & Creative Education.
* Step Perks (24/7 GP access, retail discounts & more).
* £100 Amazon voucher through our Refer-a-Friend scheme (T&Cs apply).
* Ongoing support from a specialist SEN consultant with over 10 years’ experience locally.
Requirements
* Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willing to apply).
* Professional references covering the last 2 years.
* Right to work in the UK.
* Photo ID & proof of address.
* Up-to-date CV with a full 10-year work history.
