Position: Learning Support Assistant (LSA)

New Barn School is a specialist independent school supporting children with a range of special educational needs, including autism (ASC), SEMH, ADHD, communication difficulties and associated learning challenges. We provide a nurturing, structured and therapeutic learning environment where every pupil is supported to achieve their potential.
Role Purpose
To work under the direction of the class teacher and SENCo to support pupils’ learning, emotional development and wellbeing. The LSA will help create a safe, positive and inclusive classroom environment and deliver individualised support to pupils with SEN.
Key Responsibilities

Support pupils in lessons, helping them access learning through tailored strategies and differentiated tasks.
*
Build positive, trusting relationships with pupils to promote confidence, engagement and emotional regulation.
*
Assist with implementing EHCP targets, personalised learning plans and therapeutic approaches.
*
Use strategies such as visual supports, structured routines, modelling and sensory regulation techniques.
*
Promote positive behaviour using de-escalation, consistency and trauma-informed practice.
*
Support pupils during transitions, break times and throughout the school day.
*
Provide feedback to the teacher and contribute to monitoring pupil progress.
*
Help maintain an organised, SEN-friendly classroom environment.
*
Work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team, including teachers, therapists and support staff.
*
Safeguard and promote the welfare of all pupils at all times.
Person Specification
Essential:
*
Experience supporting children or young people with SEN.
*
Calm, patient and nurturing approach.
*
Strong communication and teamwork skills.
*
Ability to follow guidance and implement structured strategies.
*
Understanding of safeguarding.
Desirable:
*
Experience with ASC, SEMH or trauma-informed practice.
*
Knowledge of visual, sensory or communication-based support strategies.
*
