Job Description

Are you a current or former Prison Officer looking for a new and rewarding challenge? Your skills in behaviour management, de-escalation, and resilience are highly valued in specialist education. We’re recruiting Learning Support Assistants for a well-regarded SEN school in Pontefract that supports pupils aged 5–16 with autism, ADHD, SEMH and learning difficulties. This role is perfect for those used to working in high-pressure environments who want to make a positive difference in the lives of young people. Key Responsibilities Provide 1:1 and small group support for pupils with additional needs Use de-escalation and behaviour management strategies effectively Support pupils’ learning, emotional regulation, and personal development Help students develop social and life skills for independence Work collaboratively with teachers, SENCOs, and external professionals What We’re Looking For Experience in prison service, secure units, youth offending, or similar high-responsibility roles Strong resilience, calmness, and authority in challenging situations A genuine interest in supporting children with SEN and SEMH Great communication and teamwork skills Commitment to full-time, term-time hours (Monday to Friday) What’s On Offer £101.40 – £110 per day Long-term, full-time position with potential to progress Ongoing training, including SEN and safeguarding CPD A supportive and structured SEN school environment The chance to transfer your skills into education and see a real impact Ideal Backgrounds Prison Officers or Ex-Prison Officers Behaviour Support Workers or Mentors Youth Justice, Probation, or Secure Unit staff SEN Teaching Assistants with behaviour management experience How to Apply If you’re ready to step into education and use your skills to support young people in Pontefract, we’d love to hear from you.
