We are working in partnership with a forward-thinking local authority in the East of England, committed to delivering high-quality regulatory services that protect public safety and support local businesses. The Environmental Health & Licensing team is seeking an experienced Licensing Officer to join them on an interim basis.
Role Overview
As a Licensing Officer, you will be responsible for administering and enforcing licensing legislation across a range of areas including taxi licensing, alcohol and entertainment, gambling, and special treatments. You’ll work closely with internal departments, external agencies, and members of the public to ensure compliance and uphold licensing standards.
Key Responsibilities
* Process and assess applications under the Licensing Act 2003, Gambling Act 2005, and taxi licensing regulations
* Conduct inspections and investigations of licensed premises and vehicles
* Prepare reports and present cases to Licensing Committees as required
* Respond to complaints and service requests relating to licensed activities
* Liaise with stakeholders including police, legal teams, and other council departments
* Maintain accurate records and update licensing databases
* Provide advice and guidance to applicants and the public
* Support enforcement action where necessary, including issuing notices and preparing prosecution files
Requirements
Essential
* Proven experience in a licensing role within a local authority
* Strong working knowledge of relevant legislation (Licensing Act 2003, Gambling Act 2005, taxi licensing)
* Excellent communication and report-writing skills
* Ability to manage a varied caseload independently
* Proficiency in using licensing systems (e.g. Idox/Uniform)
Desirable
* Experience presenting at Licensing Committees
* Knowledge of enforcement procedures and legal processes
* Relevant professional qualifications or training in licensing or regulatory services
Additional Information
* Rate: £35 per hour (via umbrella company or limited company)
* Duration: 6 months
* Location: Suffolk – hybrid working options available
* Hours: Full-time (37 hours per week)
* Start Date: ASAP
