Job Title: Manual Machinist / Surface Grinder
Location: Barnsley
Contract: Permanent, Full-Time
Salary: £31,000 – £34,000 per annum (including shift allowance, DOE) + overtime
About the Role
We are looking for an experienced Manual Machinist / Surface Grinder to join our team in Barnsley. This is a hands-on role working across manual surface grinders, horizontal borers, and lathes. The position is ideal for someone with strong precision machining skills who wants to be part of a stable and supportive team.
After an initial training and onboarding period, the role will transition onto a rotating Days and Nights shift pattern.
Key Responsibilities:
* Operate manual surface grinders, horizontal borers, and lathes.
* Read and interpret engineering drawings.
* Produce work to tight tolerances and high quality standards.
* Carry out routine machine checks and basic maintenance.
* Support wider machining and production as required.
* Maintain compliance with company health & safety standards.
What We’re Looking For:
* Previous experience in manual machining (grinding, turning, or boring).
* Ability to interpret technical/engineering drawings.
* Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
* Flexible, reliable, and team-focused approach.
Hours & Shifts:
* Days: 06:00 – 14:30 Mon–Thu, 06:00 – 11:00 Fri
* Nights: 19:30 – 06:00 Mon–Wed, 19:30 – 03:00 Thu
* Basic Week: 37 hours
* Shift Allowance: +33% nights (average annual salary £31,000 – £34,000 DOE)
* Overtime: x1.5 mid-week & Saturdays, x2 Sundays
