Job Description
Mechanical Design Engineer with a minimum 5yrs experience to join a small but highly capable technical team. This firm of around 70 manufacture and distribute on location. They value their staff, demonstrated by a very low turnover rate.
As Mechanical Design engineer this role offers a rare chance to work on innovative electro-mechanical assemblies, from design concept through to customer delivery.
You’ll be involved in the full lifecycle of product development—from 3D CAD design and detail drawing through to supporting manufacturing and responding to customer technical needs. It’s a varied, hands-on position ideal for someone who enjoys both mechanical engineering and exposure to electrical/electronic interconnect systems.
Responsibilities:
* Designing precision components and small assemblies using 3D CAD
* Producing manufacturing drawings and technical documentation to BS8888
* Supporting design changes and continuous improvement of existing product lines
* Providing technical support internally and occasionally to customers
* Collaborating with production on tooling and assembly needs
* Getting hands-on where required—this is not a pure desk job
Requirements:
* Solid experience in mechanical design/draughting, ideally in a low-volume/high-precision manufacturing environment
* Familiarity with electro-mechanical assemblies such as connectors, switches, or cabling
* Comfortable with CAD tools and producing detail drawings to British Standards
* An appreciation of basic electrical principles and how they relate to mechanical design
* Confident working in a collaborative team, willing to contribute across departments
Nice to Have (But Not Essential):
* Knowledge of connector technology, cable assemblies, or fibre optics
* Experience in design for assembly, jigs/fixtures, or testing tools
* Exposure to manufacturing processes like moulding, machining, electroplating, or adhesive bonding
