Polytec is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer to join a growing, multidisciplinary team for our client based in Cambridge. The role focusses on the design and development of novel process systems that support decarbonisation technologies, including carbon capture and hydrogen storage.
You will contribute to the delivery of innovative, commercially viable mechanical systems that address urgent climate and energy challenges. Working alongside engineers and scientists, you will help take new technologies from concept through to prototype and testing, with a strong focus on real world deployment.
Responsibilities:
• Design and develop innovative mechanical components and systems with a focus on performance, reliability, and manufacturability.
• Lead and contribute to projects involving prototyping, testing, and validation of novel systems.
• Manage and collaborate with external suppliers, manufacturers, and technology partners.
• Carry out feasibility studies, simulations, and performance assessments under operating conditions.
• Identify cost effective manufacturing and scale up opportunities.
• Work closely with chemists, materials scientists, and process engineers.
• Present technical concepts and solutions to internal and external stakeholders.
Requirements:
• Degree in Mechanical Engineering (Bachelor's or Master's); higher qualifications are advantageous.
• Strong background in mechanical design within a technical, industrial, or manufacturing environment.
• Proficiency in CAD and simulation tools (e.g. SolidWorks, ANSYS, COMSOL).
• Experience with process equipment such as vessels, heat exchangers, reactors, or electrolysers, particularly involving novel systems.
• Hands on prototyping and mechanical testing experience.
• Excellent problem solving, analytical, and communication skills.
• Knowledge of carbon capture technologies or adsorption processes and exposure to advanced materials, coatings, or metallurgy useful.
• Project management or technical leadership experience desirable.
