Job Title: Mechanical Design Engineer
Location: North West or North Wales (Hybrid – 3 days office / 2 days home)
Salary:
Permanent: £50,000 – £70,000 per annum
Contract: £400 – £450/day (Outside IR35)

Our client, a leading engineering consultancy in the water sector, is seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join their team on either a permanent or contract basis. This is a fantastic opportunity to work on major frameworks including United Utilities and Welsh Water across a variety of complex and rewarding projects.
You’ll be part of a multidisciplinary team delivering innovative mechanical design solutions across the full project lifecycle – from feasibility through to detailed design and construction support.
Key Responsibilities:
Deliver mechanical design packages for water and wastewater treatment projects
Work collaboratively with process, electrical, and civil engineering teams
Produce P&IDs, specifications, equipment schedules, and layout drawings
Engage with stakeholders including clients, contractors, and internal teams
Support site visits and construction stages where necessary
Ensure compliance with industry standards and company procedures Requirements:
Degree/HND in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
Proven experience in the UK water industry (preferably with United Utilities or Welsh Water)
Proficient in mechanical design principles, ideally with 3D CAD tools (e.g., AutoCAD Plant 3D, Revit)
Strong knowledge of water and wastewater treatment processes
Able to work autonomously and as part of a team
