Mental Health Support Assistant - Classroom Based (Primary & Secondary)

Tempest Education is seeking dedicated and resilient Mental Health Support Assistants to join a specialist SEMH school with vacancies across both their Primary and Secondary departments. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals passionate about supporting young people with complex needs and challenging behaviours.
About the Role
You will work classroom-based, supporting students with a range of mental health needs, including anxiety, depression, trauma-related behaviours, ADHD and Autism. Class sizes are small (8-10 pupils) with three adults in each room to ensure every student receives the right support.
The role involves:
Providing 1:1 and group support to students with social, emotional and mental health needs
Using a trauma-informed, nurturing approach to help pupils regulate emotions and engage with learning
Supporting behaviour management through calm, consistent strategies
Building positive, trusting relationships with young people who may present with challenging behaviours
Working closely with the class teacher and wider SEMH team to deliver meaningful support
Encouraging independence, life skills and confidence within the classroom
Who We're Looking For
Experience working with challenging behaviours and a solid understanding of mental health conditions is essential. While experience in schools is an advantage, we also welcome applicants from backgrounds including:
Mental Health Support Work
Counselling
Psychology
Social Work
Youth Work
Special Needs / SEN Classroom Support
A calm, empathetic manner and the ability to remain resilient in high-pressure situations are key to success in this role.
Requirements
Full-time availability: Monday to Friday, 8:30am-3:40pm
Experience supporting individuals with mental health needs or behavioural challenges
A trauma-informed, person-centred approach
Enhanced DBS (or willingness to obtain one)
