Job Purpose
To deliver inspiring and inclusive Music lessons that develop students’ performance, composition, and listening skills while nurturing a lifelong appreciation of music. The Music Teacher will foster creativity, build confidence, and contribute to the wider cultural life of the school through extracurricular opportunities and performances.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching & Learning
Plan and deliver engaging Music lessons across KS3 and KS4 (and KS5 if applicable), in line with the National Curriculum and exam specifications.
Develop students’ practical musicianship, creativity, and theoretical knowledge.
Differentiate lessons to support the needs of all learners, including SEN and EAL students.
Assess, record, and report on student progress, providing constructive feedback.
Encourage a love of music and appreciation of a wide range of genres and traditions.
Curriculum & Assessment
Contribute to the development of schemes of work, resources, and assessments in Music.
Prepare pupils for internal and external assessments (GCSE, BTEC, A-Level as appropriate).
Support cross-curricular learning, linking Music with other subjects and school initiatives.
Classroom & Behaviour Management
Create a positive, safe, and stimulating classroom environment.
Maintain high standards of behaviour in line with school policies.
Ensure the safe use and care of musical instruments, equipment, and resources.
Enrichment & Wider Contribution
Lead and support extracurricular music activities such as choirs, bands, or ensembles.
Organise and participate in school concerts, productions, and community events.
Provide additional support for students through revision sessions, instrumental guidance, or mentoring.
Professional Responsibilities
Engage in continuous professional development and stay up to date with current practice in Music education.
Attend staff meetings, parents’ evenings, and contribute to the wider school community.
Undertake any additional responsibilities reasonably requested by the Head of Faculty or Headteacher.
Person Specification (Essential)
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or working towards QTS.
Strong subject knowledge in Music, including performance and theory.
Ability to deliver high-quality lessons that inspire and engage students.
Commitment to raising achievement and fostering creativity in learners.
Excellent classroom and behaviour management skills.
Effective communication and organisational skills.
Desirable:
Ability to teach Music at KS5.
Experience leading school ensembles, choirs, or productions.
Proficiency in one or more instruments or vocal performance.
Experience of delivering extracurricular music programmes and events
