Job Description

Temporary Payroll Clerk – Southampton (Hybrid) Rate: £12.60 per hour Contract Length: 180 days Location: Southampton, Hampshire (SO14 area) – Hybrid working  Hours: 9:00–17:00 initially, with flexible working available after training. During busy periods, additional hours may be required (time will be given back). Start Date: Subject to clearance (DBS required) We are seeking a Temporary Payroll Clerk to join our clients payroll team in Southampton. You will be responsible for ensuring the accurate and timely delivery of payroll to staff and police officers, while maintaining compliance with legislation, policies, and audit requirements. This role offers a great opportunity to gain experience in a busy payroll environment, with full training provided. The first four weeks will be a mix of team-led training sessions and on-the-job learning, followed by ongoing support. Key Responsibilities Process accurate and timely weekly and monthly payroll for allocated staff groups. Ensure compliance with legislation, statutory requirements, and organisational agreements. Maintain confidentiality of sensitive staff records. Respond to payroll queries from staff, clients, and external agencies via phone and email, escalating complex cases where needed. Support payroll changes, ensuring employees understand the impact on their pay. Validate payroll amendments and ensure robust checking mechanisms are in place. Manage manual under/overpayments accurately and promptly. Assist with reconciliations, reporting, and compliance activities (e.g., HMRC submissions, third-party payments). Contribute to process improvements and support ad hoc payroll tasks as required. Essential Skills & Experience 5 GCSEs (Grades A–C) including English and Maths (or equivalent). Strong communication and organisational skills. Experience investigating and resolving pay queries. Good knowledge of PAYE, National Insurance, and payroll processes. Excellent attention to detail with a high level of accuracy in data entry. Ability to work flexibly under pressure and manage competing priorities.
