Job Description

Job Opportunity: Planning Officer Rate: £50 per hour Location: Stoke on Trent Section: Planning Services Job Purpose We are seeking a skilled Planning Officer to provide professional planning advice, assess planning applications, and contribute to sustainable development across Stoke-on-Trent. You will play a key role in supporting the Development Management Team, helping to deliver regeneration priorities and ensuring high-quality development in line with policy and legislation. Key Responsibilities Provide advice on planning law, policy and guidance. Assess and recommend decisions on planning applications and enforcement complaints. Support businesses by offering practical planning advice and signposting to other Council services. Contribute to sustainable regeneration initiatives in line with corporate objectives. Write and present planning reports for committees and stakeholders. Monitor compliance with planning conditions and obligations. Represent the Council as a professional witness at hearings, inquiries, and examinations. Engage with developers, stakeholders, and the public to ensure efficient and transparent planning processes. Embrace modern ICT systems to improve efficiency and service delivery. Work collaboratively across the Council and with external partners. Person Specification Eligible for Chartered Membership of the RTPI. Strong understanding of development management, enforcement, planning policy and material considerations. Awareness of the commercial and practical considerations influencing businesses and developers. Proven experience in assessing or preparing planning applications. Experience working with Members, developers, agents, customers and stakeholders. Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships. Able to travel efficiently between development sites.
