Job Description – Power System Design Engineer (EPC – HV Substation & BESS Projects)
Job Title: Power System Design Engineer
Location: Advance Grid Solutions – Glasgow
Employment Type: Full-time, Permanent
Reports to: Lead Electrical Engineer / Engineering Manager
Sector: EPC / Power Systems / Energy Storage / Grid Connections
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Power System Design Engineer to join our Engineering team, supporting the delivery of high-voltage substation and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects across the UK.
In this role, you’ll be responsible for developing electrical designs and studies that underpin our EPC projects — ensuring safe, reliable, and grid-compliant operation of complex HV networks and renewable energy systems.
You’ll collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (civil, protection, SCADA, construction, and commissioning) to deliver technically excellent, buildable, and cost-effective solutions.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead and deliver power system design packages for HV substations, grid connections, and BESS projects (typically 11–400 kV).
* Develop single line diagrams (SLDs), equipment layouts, cable schedules, interconnection diagrams, and earthing/bonding designs.
* Perform power system studies — including load flow, short circuit, protection coordination, harmonic, and dynamic stability analysis.
* Support grid connection applications, compliance submissions, and modelling (DNO/TO/NGESO).
* Prepare technical specifications for electrical equipment (transformers, switchgear, cables, earthing systems, etc.).
* Liaise with DNOs, TOs, and NGESO to ensure compliance with grid code, G99, ENA, and NG standards.
* Provide technical support during procurement, construction, and commissioning stages.
* Conduct design reviews, ensure adherence to standards and QA processes, and manage deliverables through Procore or equivalent systems.
* Work collaboratively with Protection, SCADA, Civil, and Construction Engineers to ensure full design integration.
* Mentor junior engineers and support the continuous improvement of design processes and standards.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential:
* Degree (BEng/MEng) in Electrical or Power Engineering.
* 3+ years’ experience in power system design within HV substations, grid connections, or BESS projects.
* Strong knowledge of HV/LV electrical systems, grid code compliance, and UK DNO/TO standards.
* Experience with power system modelling software (e.g., DIgSILENT PowerFactory, ETAP, PSCAD, IPSA).
* Familiarity with IEC, ENA, and National Grid specifications.
* Experience working in a multi-disciplinary EPC environment.
Desirable:
* Understanding of BESS operation, control philosophy, and grid integration.
* Working knowledge of Procore, BIM 360, or other project management platforms.
* Chartered Engineer (CEng) or working toward professional registration (IET).
* Familiarity with functional safety, interlocking logic, and commissioning activities.
What We Offer
* Competitive salary and benefits package.
* Exposure to end-to-end EPC project delivery — from feasibility to commissioning.
* Opportunity to work on cutting-edge renewable and grid-scale energy projects.
* Mentorship and professional development toward chartership (CEng).
* Collaborative, innovative, and forward-thinking team cultureDo not include the following in your job application, CV, or cover letter:
