Practice Accountant
Role Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Practice Accountant at AAT Level 4 to join a friendly, growing team. The ideal candidate will have solid experience preparing tax returns, bookkeeping, and working with sole traders and small businesses. You will play a key role in supporting our clients’ accounting needs, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely delivery of financial information.
Key Responsibilities
* Prepare and file personal and sole trader tax returns (Self Assessment)
* Maintain accurate bookkeeping records using accounting software (e.g., Xero, QuickBooks, Sage)
* Assist with VAT returns and payroll processing
* Support clients in managing their financial records and advise on basic tax planning
* Liaise with HMRC and other regulatory bodies on behalf of clients
* Prepare year-end accounts for sole traders and small businesses
* Review and reconcile accounts to ensure accuracy and compliance
* Provide general accounting support to senior accountants and partners
* Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant tax laws, accounting standards, and best practices
Requirements
* AAT Level 4 qualified (or equivalent)
* Proven experience in practice accounting, particularly with sole traders and small businesses
* Strong knowledge of tax returns preparation and filing (Self Assessment)
* Proficient in bookkeeping and familiar with accounting software such as Xero, QuickBooks, or Sage
* Understanding of VAT, payroll, and other compliance requirements
* Excellent attention to detail and organisational skills
* Strong communication skills with the ability to liaise effectively with clients
* Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
* Commitment to continuous professional development
Desirable
* Experience using cloud accounting platforms
* Additional accounting or tax qualifications
* Knowledge of limited company accounts preparation
