Representing a Leading Power Engineering Client
On behalf of our client a highly regarded and fast-growing engineering consultancy in the UK power sector we are recruiting an experienced Primary Substation Design Engineer to support the delivery of high-voltage substation projects ranging from 11kV to 132kV. This role offers a unique opportunity to join a company leading the way in DNO, IDNO, and private network design and delivery.
Our client offers more than just a job. They provide a long-term career path, a collaborative and high-performing team culture, and the flexibility to achieve a strong work-life balance. With hybrid working options, competitive salary packages, and a clear focus on professional development, this is a role where engineers can truly thrive.
You'll be responsible for the design and coordination of primary substations, from concept to detailed design. This includes producing and reviewing layout drawings, technical specifications, and design documents in line with client and industry standards. You'll work closely with civil, protection, M&E, and SCADA teams to ensure smooth and integrated project delivery. The role also involves preparing technical reports and feasibility studies, supporting tender evaluations, resolving technical queries, attending design reviews, site visits, and Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs).
To succeed in this role, you'll need a degree or HND in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or a related discipline, along with proven experience in primary substation design particularly AIS or GIS systems at 33kV to 132kV. You should have a strong understanding of substation components, be confident interpreting SLDs and general arrangement drawings, and be proficient in using AutoCAD. Knowledge of BS EN, IEC, ENA, and DNO design standards is essential, as is an understanding of earthing and bonding principles and underground cable installation methods. A full UK driving licence is required.
While not essential, it would be advantageous if you are working towards Chartered Engineer status, hold a CSCS or EUSR card, or have experience with BIM tools and cloud-based document management systems. Exposure to transmission voltage projects (66kV 400kV) would also be a bonus.
The client is an established leader in power infrastructure, supporting the UK's transition to a low-carbon energy system. With a strong pipeline of secured projects and long-term frameworks, they offer job security, varied project work, and excellent internal support for personal and professional growth.
