Principal/Associate Archaeological Consultant
Greater Leeds Area OR Birmingham/West Midlands
£45-60k DOE
Forming part of the senior Archaeology Leadership Team working alongside the Director, this role is a key development of a small’ish but growing Heritage and Archaeological consultancy.
Initially working remotely from the main office and team, this role provides the opportunity to eventually develop into a new office and team, increasing the company scope.
This role will be suitable for an existing Principal or Associate or could be a good Senior seeking the next step.
Key Responsibilities
* Support the Director in managing and delivering archaeological consultancy projects.
* Oversee or contribute to report production, including DBAs, EIA scoping, ES Chapters, setting and significance assessments.
* Liaise with clients, contractors, and curators to ensure quality and timely project delivery.
* Project design and management of archaeological fieldwork.
* In future, manage a small team of consultants, including workload planning and report review.
* Contribute to tendering and business development.
* Provide mentorship and quality assurance for the wider archaeology team.
* Maintain high standards of health & safety and professional practice.
Experience
Essential:
* Proven background in archaeology, with a minimum of 5+ years in a consultancy or senior contractor role.
* Strong track record in desk-based assessments and report writing.
* Demonstrated experience in managing fieldwork projects (small to large-scale).
* Experience managing archaeological teams, whether at a contractor or as a consultant.
* Familiarity with the UK planning system, and curatorial engagement.
* A proven ability to generate project income, whether through existing client relationships or active business development.
* Involvement in tender submissions and project design.
Desirable:
* Experience supervising or mentoring junior staff.
* Background in reviewing and approving technical reports.
Key skills
A strong technical knowledge base, commercial mindset, communication and teamwork, leadership, empathy, work ethic, excellent understanding of Health & Safety responsibilities and of the UK planning system, excellent writing skills, time management, ability to critique and review colleague’s writing and provide suitable feedback.
Education & Professional Membership:
A relevant undergraduate degree (Archaeology, History, etc.); postgraduate degrees welcomed but not required.
Chartered Institute for Archaeologists Membership Level: ACIfA or preferably MCIfA.
