Principal Chartered Structural Engineer - Leadership Role (North West)
I'm currently supporting a well-established, multi-disciplinary consultancy in the North West that is looking to appoint a Principal Chartered Structural Engineer. This is a senior-level leadership position overseeing the structural division and driving the continued growth of the business.
The consultancy has a strong presence in the residential development sector, with growing involvement in wider structural work including both superstructure and substructure design. Following recent investment and expansion plans, they are looking for a highly experienced Chartered Engineer to take ownership of the department and lead it into the next phase of development.
The Role
This is a pivotal role reporting directly to the Managing Director. You will manage day-to-day operations of the structural team while spearheading business development, client engagement, and team growth. The position suits someone with a strong technical background who also enjoys leadership, strategy, and shaping a department.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and manage the structural engineering team on a daily basis
Oversee the delivery of structural engineering projects from concept through to completion
Provide technical guidance, sign-off, and quality assurance for engineering outputs
Carry out structural surveys and interpret findings
Mentor and develop junior engineers and technicians
Prepare structural calculations, design reports, drawings, and specifications
Coordinate with other internal disciplines and external stakeholders
Maintain and develop client relationships, ensuring successful delivery of commissions
Support business development activities and contribute to departmental growth strategy
About You
Degree-qualified in Civil or Structural Engineering (BEng or MEng)
Chartered with either IStructE or ICE (essential)
15+ years' UK consultancy experience, ideally within a multi-disciplinary environment
Proven experience in the design of both superstructure and substructure
Strong technical ability with relevant structural design software
Experienced in leading teams, mentoring staff, and managing departmental operations
Excellent communication, client-facing and organisational skills
Proactive, commercially aware, and confident in decision-making at a senior level
