Principal Electrical Engineer Birmingham | £55,000 + Hybrid (2 Days In 3 Days at Home) About Them They are an energy‑centric, multidisciplinary building services consultancy specialising in electrical and mechanical design across commercial, retail, industrial, education, health, leisure, residential and public‑sector sectors. They deliver full M&E design (RIBA stages 1–7), sustainable building services, low–carbon and renewable‑ready systems, and integrated control/BMS solutions. Role Overview We seek an experienced Principal Electrical Engineer to lead our electrical building‑services design team, manage major projects, and drive technical excellence across the full project lifecycle — from concept to completion. This pivotal role will combine hands‑on technical design, client liaison, mentor/lead junior engineers, and ensure compliance, quality and efficiency. Key Responsibilities * Lead and deliver full electrical design packages (mains/sub‑mains distribution, lighting — internal, external, emergency, specialist and controlled lighting, small‑power and ancillary services, LV distribution, standby/UPS/generation, data & comms, earthing/ bonding, containment systems, renewable‑ready power systems, BMS/controls wiring where required). * Produce performance specifications, scope of works, electrical calculations, drawings/drawings coordination, design risk assessments, and tender documents. * Manage and mentor junior/mid‑level electrical and building services engineers; review designs, ensure standards compliance (regulatory, best‑practice, sustainability, health & safety). * Coordinate electrical design with mechanical, environmental and specialist building‑services disciplines and ensure integrated, buildable, cost‑effective M&E solutions. * Interface with clients, architects, contractors and project stakeholders — representing the consultancy’s technical and professional standards and building long‑term client relationships. * Ensure sustainable, energy‑efficient and future‑proof building services solutions (including renewable energy integration, low‑carbon solutions, smart building technologies). Required Experience & Skills * Chartered Engineer status (or equivalent) in building services / electrical engineering. * Significant experience (10+ years) in building services / M&E design consultancy, delivering medium to large scale projects across sectors (commercial, retail, industrial, education, healthcare, residential, etc.). * Proven track record designing comprehensive electrical services: distribution, lighting, fire & life‑safety systems, controls/BMS integration, data/communications, standby/UPS, renewable‑ready systems. * Strong technical capability: electrical calculations, design standards compliance, specification writing, tender documentation, risk assessments. * Proficiency in relevant design tools (AutoCAD or equivalent), with the ability to coordinate with multi-disciplinary teams. Familiarity with BMS/controls systems and sustainability/energy‑efficient design principles is an advantage. * Strong project management, communication and client‑facing skills; ability to lead a design team, manage workload, mentor junior staff and meet deadlines. * Commitment to quality, safety, sustainability and continuous improvement — aligned with consultancy’s values. What They Offer * Senior, influential role within a dynamic, multidisciplinary M&E consultancy delivering a wide variety of building services projects across sectors and UK-wide. * Opportunity to lead, shape and grow the electrical design team; influence design standards, project delivery and sustainability practices. * Exposure to technically challenging, varied projects — including renewable energy‑ready, smart building and low‑carbon schemes. * Professional environment that values innovation, collaboration, integrity, quality and continual improvement
