Principal Environmental Engineer - Sustainability Team
Up to £70k
London
A leading design-focused consultancy is looking for a Principal Environmental Engineer to join their growing sustainability team. This is an exciting opportunity to take a senior technical role in a business that collaborates closely with architects and clients to embed sustainability from concept through to delivery.
The Role
As Principal Environmental Engineer, you'll act as the technical lead in one of two specialist areas:
* Building Physics - dynamic thermal modelling, overheating analysis, energy compliance and developing performance-led design strategies or
* Whole Life Carbon (WLC) - embodied carbon analysis, life cycle assessments, circular economy strategies and advising on Net Zero carbon.
You'll work alongside multidisciplinary design teams, supporting sustainable design decisions and adding value across a range of project types, from commercial and residential to cultural and mixed-use developments.
Key responsibilities include:
* Leading project deliverables and providing deep technical expertise in your specialist area
* Engaging directly with architects, clients and design teams to shape sustainable design strategies
* Presenting technical findings and sustainability roadmaps to clients and stakeholders
* Mentoring junior sustainability consultants and helping grow team capability
* Keeping up to date with best practice, emerging tools, and evolving regulations
About You
* Strong experience in sustainable design or environmental engineering consultancy
* Technical expertise in either Building Physics (e.g., IES-VE, TM52/54/59) or WLC/embodied carbon assessments (e.g., OneClick LCA or similar)
* Confident communicator with the ability to clearly explain complex technical concepts
* Collaborative and design-minded, keen to influence projects early in the design process
* Experience delivering technical work on diverse projects and coordinating with clients and design teams
