The Principal Mechanical Engineer leads the delivery of engineering and technical activities, applying mechanical engineering principles, domain knowledge, and experience. They resolve complex technical issues, ensure compliance with specifications, and support stakeholder requirements while mentoring others and working independently or within small teams.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead and manage multi-disciplinary teams delivering mechanical engineering work within scope, time, and quality requirements.
• Provide technical oversight and approval of engineering outputs (calculations, analyses, reports, specifications, and method statements).
• Ensure compliance with relevant codes, standards, and health, safety, and environmental requirements.
• Act as a subject matter expert in mechanical systems, solving complex technical problems and supporting project delivery.
• Build and maintain strong customer relationships and support business development activities.
• Develop team capability through coaching, mentoring, and effective resource management.
Experience & Qualifications
Essential:
• Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or related discipline)
• Chartered Engineer (CEng)
• Experience leading teams delivering mechanical engineering and analysis activities
• Nuclear or Defence industry experience
• Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills
Desirable:
• Professional membership (e.g., IMechE)
• Experience across full project lifecycles and regulated industries
• Piping experience
