Principal Road Safety Engineer Location: Gloucestershire Salary: £52,800 per annum Job Type: Permanent Make a real difference to road safety across Gloucestershire Are you a highly experienced and driven road safety professional ready to take the next step in your career?  Our client is looking for a Principal Road Safety Engineer to join the dynamic Road Safety team. This is a fantastic opportunity to play a pivotal role in improving road safety across the county, shaping policy, leading key projects, and working in collaboration with internal and external partners. As Principal Engineer, you’ll help deliver our Road Safety Policy and Safe Systems approach while ensuring we meet our statutory obligations. Your work will directly influence casualty reduction, community initiatives, and the future of safer travel in Gloucestershire. Key Responsibilities: Lead on the delivery of road safety projects and initiatives in line with local and national policies. Oversee collision data analysis to develop evidence-based interventions and feasibility studies. Collaborate with the Traffic Regulation Orders (TRO) and Engineering teams to align strategies and schemes. Provide specialist advice and respond to enquiries from stakeholders, elected members, and the public. Supervise the end-to-end lifecycle of road safety schemes, ensuring compliance with GCC processes. Attend and lead Road Safety Audits in accordance with GCC policy and GG119. Represent GCC at internal and public meetings, particularly in relation to serious incidents and speed assessments. Line-manage and mentor junior engineers and contribute to team development. Lead the Data and Engineering team within the Road Safety function. Promote innovation in data analysis tools, policy development, and sustainable travel initiatives. What We’re Looking For: Essential Experience: Proven expertise in collision analysis and road safety scheme development. In-depth knowledge of the Traffic Signs Regulations, Manual for Streets, and DMRB. Experience in highway and active travel scheme design, feasibility reporting, and road safety audits. Strong leadership, stakeholder engagement, and communication skills. Demonstrable ability to manage budgets, prioritise projects, and work across teams and agencies. Proficient in AutoCAD and traffic signage design software. Qualifications: HND or Degree in Civil Engineering (or equivalent experience). Road Safety Audit training (RoSPA-approved or equivalent). Incorporated or Chartered status with MCIHT or similar. Membership with MSoRSA or equivalent. Project Management qualification or demonstrable experience. Desirable Attributes: Resilient, proactive and flexible approach to challenges. Passionate about safety, sustainability and innovation. Politically astute with strong analytical and negotiation skills. Committed to personal and team development. Additional Information: A full UK driving licence is required.
