Principal/Associate Structural Engineer – Energy Sector
Location: Newcastle | Hybrid or Remote | Salary: Up to £80,000 (Dependant on experience)
My client is seeking a driven and technically proficient Principal Structural Engineer to take ownership of the design delivery for key energy projects. This is an exciting opportunity to lead complex structural engineering work, guide junior engineers, and interface directly with clients on innovative and sustainable developments. You will be working on a multimillion-pound framework, which ensures work for the next 10 years.
They do a lot of work on the national grid/SSE framework, completing detailed design of substations, and converter stations. They also do a lot of work on HVDC projects, as well as large portal frame buildings on the energy project sites.

As a central figure in the design process, you will manage technical output, support commercial performance, and ensure design compliance across all structural aspects of your project—backed by our collaborative teams and systems.
Your Role & Responsibilities:
Lead the structural design delivery of assigned projects, ensuring technical excellence, compliance, and alignment with client expectations.
Coordinate across multidisciplinary teams to maintain integration and communication throughout the project lifecycle.
Act as the primary day-to-day structural contact for clients, fostering strong working relationships and timely issue resolution.
Oversee and mentor structural engineering staff, managing work allocation, quality assurance, and technical support within the team.
Support the financial and commercial management of the structural scope, including cost control, forecasting, and performance reporting.
Perform and delegate detailed reviews of structural calculations, models, drawings, and specifications in line with quality management systems.
Champion knowledge-sharing, design reviews, and risk assessments to continuously improve team output and safety awareness.
What We’re Looking For:
Working toward Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with a recognised institution (or already achieved).
Proven experience delivering technical components of structural projects.
Strong skills in both traditional structural analysis (hand calculations) and advanced computer-aided analysis using proprietary software.
Proficient in Revit Structure and understanding of how structural models interface with other disciplines.
Familiar with all major structural materials and able to recommend their use based on project demands.
Ability to develop concept designs and appraise alternative construction methods and materials early in the design process.
Effective communicator across written, verbal, and visual formats. Confident in writing reports, presenting designs, and engaging with clients.
Understanding of environmental, sustainability, and health & safety factors in structural design and construction practices.
Demonstrated experience in leading or mentoring junior engineers or technicians and conducting peer reviews.
Desirable Experience:
Organising and leading design reviews at key project stages.
Applying hazard and risk assessment principles to mitigate health, safety, and environmental risks.
Managing resources and delivery schedules for specific project components.
Recognising and communicating changes to project scope and their impact on delivery or cost.
Sharing knowledge and best practices to drive team productivity and learning.
