Principal Substations Engineer – Electrical Design
We are seeking a highly experienced and technically strong Principal Substations Engineer to join our Electrical Design team. This senior-level position involves leading the primary plant design function, overseeing key project deliverables, and supporting client engagement for high-voltage substation projects across the UK.
The successful candidate will be based at one of our UK offices and will be expected to travel regularly to client sites and other office locations. Occasional overnight stays will be required. A valid UK driving licence is essential.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead a team of substation engineers and act as the technical authority for primary substation design.
Deliver substation primary plant and cable design projects, ensuring compliance with project quality, cost, and delivery targe
Produce and review high-quality drawings, calculations, specifications, and reports for the following engineering studies:

Load flow and reactive power capability study
*
Short-circuit study
*
Protection settings study
*
Arc-flash analysis
*
Transient stability study
*
Motor-starting study
*
Harmonics study
*
Energization study
*
Grid compliance / G99 guidelines study
*
LV coordination studies (BS7671)
*
Insulation coordination study
Lead on all aspects of primary plant design including transformers, GIS/AIS switchgear, busbars, GIB systems, MV terminations, and associated substation equipment up to 400kV.
Conduct site surveys and address constructability, safety, and design risk issues.
Collaborate closely with civil, structural, and overhead line teams to ensure fully coordinated substation designs.
Act as CDM2015 Principal Designer where applicable, ensuring full compliance with health, safety, and quality standards.
Prepare and lead client presentations, technical discussions, and internal design reviews.
Support business development activities by identifying opportunities during project execution and contributing to technical proposals.
Independently manage design deliverables and project budgets, ensuring timely delivery and cost control.
Requirements:
Extensive experience in high-voltage substation primary design (up to 400kV).
Proven ability to produce and review engineering deliverables across all stages of design.
Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential, with the ability to present technical information clearly to both clients and internal teams.
Deep understanding of design standards, DNO/National Grid requirements, and UK regulations including CDM2015.
Strong analytical and numerical skills with experience performing a range of system studies and technical analyses.
