PRU Teaching Assistant - Secondary PRU - Manchester - Step Teachers
Start: ASAP | Pay: Up to £105/day DoE (PAYE)
Hours: Full-time | Mon-Fri | 8:30am-3:30pm
Contract: Temp-to-Perm opportunity
We are partnering with a Pupil Referral Unit in Manchester that supports mixed-gender students aged 11-16, many of whom have been permanently excluded or face significant social, emotional, or behavioural barriers to learning. The PRU delivers a full academic curriculum alongside tailored support, in multiple learning hubs embedded across the city, to ensure we meet each student's needs and prepare them well for life after school.
We're seeking someone who's resilient, compassionate and able to work flexibly across different sites. You'll help young people who have struggled elsewhere, supporting them to re-engage with learning, reduce behavioural incidents, and build confidence. A positive, consistent presence will be crucial.
As a PRU Teaching Assistant, you'll:
* Work 1:1 and with small groups to support students' behaviour, emotional regulation, and participation in lessons
* Assist teachers and pastoral/carer staff to maintain calm, safe learning spaces across different sites
* Help students re-establish routines, trust, and self-esteem so that they can better access the curriculum
* Contribute to broader support plans, recording progress and working with external agencies as needed
What you'll need:
* Minimum 3 months' experience working with young people in settings with challenging behaviour or SEMH needs
* Calm under pressure; able to stay steady when behaviours escalate
* Strong interpersonal skills; clear communication and ability to build rapport quickly
