QHSE Manager – Operational Health & Safety, ISO & Facilities Compliance
Location: Bedfordshire
Salary: Up to £60,000 + bonus
Working pattern: Primarily site-based, with some flexibility once established
An established, growing multi-site business is looking to appoint a hands-on QHSE Manager to take ownership of operational Health & Safety, ISO management systems and facilities compliance across its UK operations.
This is a broad, practical role suited to someone who enjoys being visible on site and working closely with operational teams. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining safe working practices, supporting ISO compliance, improving site standards and ensuring key facilities and contractor controls are properly managed.
This is not a purely strategic or remote QHSE role. It will suit someone who is comfortable combining management systems and compliance work with day-to-day operational activity such as inductions, risk assessments, contractor reviews, site inspections, H&S observations and incident follow-up.
The role
The QHSE Manager will act as the main internal point of contact for Health & Safety, ISO compliance and site/facilities-related controls.
Responsibilities will include:
*
Leading and improving day-to-day Health & Safety standards across operational environments
*
Carrying out and reviewing risk assessments, safe systems of work, RAMS and site procedures
*
Managing incident reporting, investigation, corrective actions and lessons learned
*
Supporting site inductions, toolbox talks, employee awareness and H&S engagement
*
Maintaining and improving ISO management systems, including ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001
*
Planning and supporting internal audits, external audits and corrective action follow-up
*
Working with external consultants and certification bodies where required
*
Managing contractor compliance, including RAMS review, inductions and safe working controls
*
Supporting facilities compliance, including testing, servicing, inspections and maintenance records
*
Overseeing key site compliance areas such as fire safety, emergency procedures, PPE, COSHH, first aid and statutory checks
*
Working closely with operational managers to identify gaps and implement practical improvements
*
Supporting environmental and sustainability initiatives at site level
*
Maintaining accurate records, reporting and compliance documentation
*
Visiting other UK sites as required, likely on an occasional/quarterly basis
The person
The successful candidate is likely to come from a QHSE, HSE, SHEQ, Health & Safety, Compliance or Facilities Compliance background.
You will need to be practical, organised and confident working directly with managers, employees, contractors and external advisers.
The role would suit someone who has enough breadth across H&S, ISO and facilities compliance, but who still enjoys being hands-on and operational.
Essential / highly desirable experience
*
NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent Health & Safety qualification
*
IOSH membership or similar professional grounding would be useful
*
Experience in an operational Health & Safety role
*
Exposure to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001
*
Experience supporting or managing internal and/or external audits
*
Strong working knowledge of risk assessments, RAMS, SOPs, incident investigation and safe systems of work
*
Facilities compliance exposure, including testing, servicing, inspections, fire safety or statutory checks
*
Experience in a warehouse, distribution, manufacturing, engineering, logistics, industrial or similar operational environment
*
Strong communication skills and the ability to influence operational teams
*
Comfortable being site-based and visible within the business
*
Full UK driving licence
Useful backgrounds
Relevant sector experience could include distribution, logistics, warehousing, manufacturing, engineering, industrial services, facilities, building products, packaging, food production, electronics, construction-related environments or similar.
Exact sector is less important than having experience in a practical, site-led environment involving people, equipment, contractors, operational risk and compliance.
Package
*
Salary up to £60,000 depending on experience, plus bonus scheme
*
Primarily site-based role with occasional travel to other UK sites
*
Some flexibility may be available once established
