Job Description

Apricus Resourcing are currently looking for an enthusiastic, dynamic and adaptable Qualified Social Worker needed for a leading Family Social Service based in B6 Post Code area of Birmingham, who is really passionate about providing a personal recovery service. This role is working full time with standard hours 36.5 hours per week Monday – Friday 8:45am-5:15pm. The role is to assess and safeguard young people aged 16–17 who present as homeless or at risk of homelessness, in line with the Southwark Judgement (2009) and the Children Act 1989, ensuring that statutory duties under Section 20 are fully understood, applied, and lawfully discharged. Key Responsibilities: • Carry out timely, child-centred assessments under Section 17 and Section 20 of the Children Act 1989 for 16- and 17-year-olds who present as homeless or at risk. • Determine whether a young person is a ‘child in need’ and whether they require accommodation under Section 20. • Ensure young people are fully informed of their legal rights, including entitlements if accepted as a looked after child. Safeguarding and Planning • Identify and respond to safeguarding concerns, including risks of exploitation, abuse, self-harm, or neglect. • Develop robust child in need plans, care plans, and, where applicable, pathway plans in partnership with the young person. • Promote the voice of the young person and involve them meaningfully in all decision-making processes. Partnership Working • Work collaboratively with housing teams, family support workers, health services, education providers, and voluntary sector organisations. • Lead joint assessments in line with local Southwark Protocols, ensuring the local authority’s legal duties are met. Documentation and Legal Compliance • Maintain accurate, contemporaneous records that clearly document assessments, decisions, and the rationale for accepting or declining Section 20 accommodation. • Ensure that any refusal of Section 20 by a young person is properly explored, recorded, and reviewed. • Comply with statutory guidance including Working Together to Safeguard Children (2018) and The Children Act 1989 Guidance and Regulations – Volume 3: Planning Transition to Adulthood for Care Leavers. Advocacy and Rights Awareness • Promote young people’s access to independent advocacy. • Uphold young people’s rights to care, support, and education, including ensuring access to leaving care services where applicable. Essential requirements: • Degree in Social Work and registration with Social Work England Registration • Strong understanding of the Southwark Judgement and its legal implications • Experience of working with adolescents, particularly those at risk of homelessness or family breakdown • Knowledge of child protection procedures and the Children Act 1989 • Ability to work collaboratively across agencies and manage complex cases In return for your commitment, we are able to offer a very competitive rate of pay of between £26.74-£29.07 per hour dependent on experience determined by interview.
