Freelance Quantity Surveyor
Environment Agency Project | Bideford, Devon | Hybrid
The Opportunity
We’re looking to appoint an experienced Freelance Quantity Surveyor to join a live £10m Environment Agency project based in Bideford, Devon.
This is a technically challenging civils scheme involving the construction of a reservoir and dam, offering a great mix of earthworks, RC and infrastructure delivery. The project is already underway, so this role will suit a QS who is comfortable stepping into a live job and taking ownership of commercial activities from day one.
This is a long-term freelance opportunity (up to 12 months) with strong continuity of work.
The Project
£10m Environment Agency scheme
Reservoir and dam construction
Earth banks and major earthworks
Reinforced concrete structures
Piling and associated civils
Delivered under NEC Option C contract A well-structured project with good technical depth and a collaborative delivery team.
The Role
As Freelance Quantity Surveyor, you’ll support the commercial management of the project, working closely with site and operational teams to drive performance and maintain commercial control. Key responsibilities will include:
Managing commercial activities on a live civil engineering project
Administering NEC Option C contract
Preparing and managing CVRs, forecasting and reporting
Managing variations, compensation events and change control
Subcontractor procurement and commercial management
Applications for payment and cash flow management
Supporting agreement of final accounts
Working closely with site teams to ensure commercial alignment with delivery About You
We’re looking for a proven civil engineering Quantity Surveyor who is confident working on live infrastructure projects. You’ll bring:
Strong experience in civil engineering / infrastructure projects
Good working knowledge of NEC contracts (Option C preferred)
Experience managing commercial aspects of live projects
Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
A proactive, organised and commercially aware approach Experience working on Environment Agency or flood defence projects would be advantageous.
Rate & Working Arrangement
£400 – £450 per day (PAYE)
Hybrid working available
Minimum 2 days per week on site in Bideford
Approx. 12-month contract Why This Role?
