Job Description - Quantity Surveyor
Position: Quantity Surveyor
Location: Office and Site Based
Role Overview
The Quantity Surveyor is responsible for managing the commercial and financial aspects of painting and decorating projects from tender through to final account. Working closely with project managers, site teams, clients, and subcontractors, the successful candidate will ensure projects are delivered profitably while maintaining the highest standards of quality, cost control, and contractual compliance.
Key Responsibilities
Prepare detailed cost estimates and tender submissions for painting and decorating projects.
Review specifications, drawings, and schedules to accurately measure and price works.
Prepare cost plans, budgets, and procurement schedules.
Source, negotiate, and appoint specialist subcontractors and suppliers.
Procure paints, coatings, wall coverings, access equipment, and associated materials.
Prepare applications for payment, valuations, and final accounts.
Assess and manage variations, compensation events, and change orders.
Monitor project costs, labour productivity, and material expenditure to maximise profitability.
Produce monthly cost reports, forecasts, and commercial performance updates.
Support Project Managers with cost management, programme impacts, and commercial decision-making.
Administer contracts in accordance with JCT, NEC, and other standard forms of contract where applicable.
Identify commercial risks and implement mitigation strategies.
Attend pre-start meetings, progress meetings, and site visits as required.
Build and maintain strong working relationships with clients, main contractors, suppliers, and subcontractors.
Ensure all commercial documentation is maintained accurately and submitted within agreed timescales.
Qualifications & Experience
Degree or equivalent qualification in Quantity Surveying or Construction Management.
Minimum of 3 years' experience in quantity surveying within the construction industry.
Experience in painting and decorating, specialist finishes, refurbishment, or fit-out projects is highly desirable.
Sound knowledge of construction contracts, particularly JCT and NEC.
Experience managing multiple live projects and final accounts.
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Office, and commercial management software.
Skills & Competencies
Strong understanding of painting and decorating methods, specifications, and pricing.
Excellent numerical and analytical skills.
High level of commercial awareness.
Strong negotiation and procurement skills.
Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
Ability to interpret construction drawings and specifications.

Ability to work independently while collaborating with operational teams.
