Job Description

Service Care Legal are currently recruiting on behalf of a locl authority in the East Sussex region who are seeking a Regulatory Lawyer to join their team on a contract basis. This contract will like be for 22 months.   Role:                     Licensing and Regulatory Lawyer Location:             Hybrid – East Sussex Hours:                  4-day week (30 hours) Contract:             Initial 12 weeks, likely extension up to 1 year 10 months Role Overview - Support the Head of Legal Services in delivering high-quality legal services, with a focus on licensing, regulatory, and enforcement matters.   Key Responsibilities Represent the council in criminal and civil litigation, including tenancy fraud, housing enforcement, and unauthorised encampments. Provide legal advice on licensing (taxis, street trading, gambling, sex establishments) and act as legal advisor to Licensing Committees. Handle appeals and advocacy in Magistrates’ Court and First Tier Tribunal. Advise on environmental health, animal welfare licensing, and coroner’s hearings. Deliver clear legal advice to officers and members, participate in projects and committees, and manage external legal providers.  Requirements Qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Chartered Legal Executive. Experience in litigation, licensing, and regulatory law. Strong advocacy and communication skills.
