Job Title: Reliability Engineer (EnACT)
Location: HM Naval Base, Portsmouth (HMNBP)

What You’ll be doing:
As a key member of the Engineering, Assurance and Compliance Team (EnACT), the Reliability Engineer will play a critical role in delivering technical governance and assurance across systems and equipment at HM Naval Base Portsmouth. This position ensures that all infrastructure operates safely, consistently, and with optimal reliability, while remaining fully compliant with relevant legislative and regulatory standards.
With a strong background in reliability or systems engineering and qualifications to HNC level or higher, you’ll bring proven experience and a commitment to delivering high-quality engineering solutions within a complex maritime environment. Your expertise will support the performance and resilience of critical assets, helping to minimise downtime and extend operational life across a wide range of infrastructure systems.
You’ll take ownership of technical challenges, oversee the reliability aspects of asset acceptance and commissioning in infrastructure projects, and ensure alignment with design intent and operational requirements. Furthermore, your responsibilities will include developing and managing reliability-centred maintenance strategies, supporting strategic infrastructure planning, and contributing to business improvement initiatives.
Your work will be instrumental in identifying failure modes, analysing asset performance data, and implementing preventative measures to enhance system dependability. By embedding reliability principles into asset management and engineering practices, you’ll help ensure the long-term sustainability and operational readiness of Portsmouth Naval Base.
You’ll Have:
Ideally, you’ll be a qualified reliability engineer with at least five years’ experience in the discipline, holding professional membership with a recognised technical body and actively working towards IEng accreditation or equivalent. Your background will include health and safety training such as IOSH Managing Safely, CITB SMSTS, CSCS or similar, equipping you to operate confidently within a regulated and safety-critical environment.
We’re looking for someone who can maintain a systems-level perspective while also understanding the detail behind asset performance, failure modes, and investigative rationale. You’ll have a strong grasp of statutory and regulatory compliance within maritime and built infrastructure settings and be capable of safely meeting operational demands across all areas of Portsmouth Naval Base. A working knowledge of reliability principles applied to an industrial setting is highly beneficial, alongside solid expertise in root cause analysis, condition monitoring, and reliability-centred maintenance strategies.
