Safety & Compliance Manager
Location: Tilbury
Salary: Up to £60,840 + £4,694 location allowance + up to 10% bonus
Contract: Permanent

We are recruiting on behalf of a leading organisation within the energy and waste management sector for an experienced Safety & Compliance Manager. This is a key leadership role within a modern Energy Recovery Facility, responsible for driving best practice across Safety, Health, Environment, Quality and Security (SHEQS).
This opportunity is ideal for someone who combines strong technical expertise with a collaborative leadership style, working closely with operational teams to embed a positive safety culture and deliver continuous improvement.
The Role
As Safety & Compliance Manager, you will act as the primary point of contact for all safety and compliance matters on site. You will be responsible for maintaining and enhancing management systems, ensuring regulatory and environmental compliance, and supporting operational performance.
Key responsibilities include:
Leading the development and continuous improvement of site safety systems and procedures
Managing health, safety and environmental monitoring programmes in line with legislation and industry best practice
Ensuring compliance with ISO45001, ISO9001, ISO14001 and ISO50001 standards
Acting as audit lead and preparing the site for internal and external audits
Leading incident and accident investigations, identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions
Monitoring performance data, reporting against KPIs and driving improvements
Delivering safety initiatives, briefings and toolbox talks across the site
Supporting contractor management and ensuring safe working practices during site activities
Providing safety leadership during planned and unplanned outages
Liaising with regulators and maintaining professional relationships
Working collaboratively with operations and engineering teams to improve safety and compliance outcomes
About You
You will be an experienced Safety & Compliance professional with a strong background in waste management or a similar complex industrial environment. You will be a confident communicator, able to influence and support teams to achieve high standards through collaboration rather than enforcement alone.
Essential requirements:
Extensive knowledge of waste management operations
Strong understanding of health and safety legislation and best practice
Proven experience managing safety within a complex industrial setting
Experience conducting investigations using root cause analysis
Strong analytical and data management skills (including Excel)
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to manage multiple priorities effectively
Science-based degree (or equivalent experience)
NEBOSH qualification (or equivalent)
