Astute's Nuclear Team is partnering with a leading engineering and technology organisation specialising in complex maritime and defence systems to recruit a Safety Engineer to join its established team based at their offices in Winfrith Newburgh. Responsibilities and duties of the Safety Engineer role Reporting to the Manager you will: Work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams, customers, suppliers and assurance bodies to ensure that safety risks are identified, controlled and reduced to an acceptable level. The role will involve working across the full engineering lifecycle, from early concept and bid phases through to design, testing, acceptance and in-service support and will include: Developing and maintaining Safety Management Plans and Functional Safety Management Plans. Leading safety and compliance assessments during concept, bid and design phases. Deriving, managing and maintaining safety requirements with full traceability through the engineering lifecycle. Leading hazard identification and risk assessments using techniques including HAZID, HAZOP, SWIFT, FMECA, FTA and ETA. Managing live hazard logs, including control ownership, action tracking, ALARP justification and residual risk. Working with multidisciplinary engineering teams to drive design-led risk reduction and inherently safe solutions. Assessing supplier and system interfaces to ensure appropriate safety controls and evidence are in place. Developing and maintaining structured Safety Cases and supporting safety arguments and justifications. Facilitating hazard workshops, safety working groups and design reviews. Supporting internal and external assurance, certification and customer engagement activities. Providing ongoing safety support through change control, periodic Safety Case reviews and in-service activities. Supporting bid estimating and the management of safety engineering work packages. Professional qualifications We are looking for someone with the following: A degree in Engineering, Physical Sciences or equivalent experience. Experience in Safety Engineering, Safety Cases and lifecycle assurance. Knowledge of hazard analysis and safety-critical standards such as Def Stan 00-056, MIL-STD-882E or IEC 61508. Strong understanding of ALARP and risk management. Excellent communication and report-writing skills. IEng/CEng status or a willingness to work towards professional registration. Experience with DOORS, Enterprise Architect or PTC Windchill would be advantageous, as would a TÜV Functional Safety qualification. Security Clearance: You must be eligible to obtain SC clearance.
