Job Description

Preparation of Practical Lessons: Set up and prepare equipment, materials, and chemicals for science experiments and demonstrations. Ensure all apparatus is available, functional, and safe to use. Maintenance and Safety: Clean and store equipment after use. Safely handle, label, and store chemicals and hazardous materials in line with COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) regulations. Maintain safety standards, carry out risk assessments, and ensure compliance with Health and Safety regulations. Inventory Management: Keep track of stock levels of equipment and chemicals. Order supplies and liaise with suppliers when necessary. Maintain up-to-date records of inventory and safety data sheets. Support During Lessons: Assist science teachers during practical lessons when needed. Troubleshoot any issues with equipment or experiments. Occasionally demonstrate techniques to students. Administrative and Technical Duties: Assist with developing teaching materials and practical worksheets. Help manage displays, student project materials, and science fairs or open evenings. Calibrate and repair equipment when needed. Skills and Qualifications: A background in science (GCSEs/A-Levels in science; a degree or HND in a scientific field is an advantage). Strong understanding of lab safety procedures. Good organisational and time-management skills. Attention to detail and problem-solving ability. IT literacy for record-keeping and possibly using educational software. School Environment Specifics (London): Likely to be working with diverse student populations. Expected to adapt to fast-paced urban school environments. May need an enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check. In multi-academy trusts or larger schools, you may be part of a science technician team led by a Senior Science Technician or Science Lab Manager. Professional Development: Science technicians are encouraged to: Join professional bodies (e.g. CLEAPSS, ASE – Association for Science Education). Attend CPD (Continuing Professional Development) training. Stay updated with changes to science curriculums and laboratory best practices
