Job Description

Ready to use your passion for science to truly change lives? Tradewind Recruitment is seeking an exceptional Science Teacher to join our partner Special Educational Needs and Mental Health (SEMH) schools in the Hull area. This is a unique opportunity to make a significant impact on the lives of young people from Key Stage 3 to Key Stage 5 (ages 11-19) who have Social, Emotional, and Mental Health challenges. You'll become part of a committed and innovative team, working within a supportive and well-established environment that prioritizes personalized learning and an inclusive atmosphere for every student. Detailed Job Description As a Science Teacher in an SEMH setting, you will: Plan and Deliver Tailored Lessons: Develop and deliver creative, engaging, and highly differentiated science lessons across all key stages, adapting the National Curriculum to meet the individual needs and learning styles of students with SEMH. Focus on Practical and Functional Skills: Emphasize hands-on, practical science activities that build functional skills and foster a genuine curiosity for the world around them. Create a Nurturing Environment: Manage and guide a small class with a high staff-to-student ratio, including teaching assistants, to create a consistent, calm, and positive classroom where students feel safe and supported. Manage Challenging Behaviors: Use your strong classroom management skills and understanding of SEMH to proactively de-escalate challenging behaviors and promote a respectful and positive school culture. Monitor and Report Progress: Regularly assess student progress, providing clear and detailed updates to the senior leadership team, parents, and carers to ensure a collaborative approach to student development. Contribute to School Development: If you have relevant interest or experience, you can contribute to the leadership of a specific subject or curriculum area, helping to shape the school's educational offering. The Ideal Candidate Will Have: Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) is essential. Experience in an SEMH setting or working closely with young people with complex needs and challenging behaviors. A flexible and proactive approach to education, with the ability to think on your feet and adapt lessons to meet immediate student needs. A creative outlook and the ability to design meaningful and stimulating science lessons that engage disengaged learners. Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and external professionals. Why Work in an SEMH School? Working in an SEMH school is not without its challenges, but the rewards are profound and deeply fulfilling. Making a Real Difference: You will have the opportunity to transform the educational journey for students who have often been failed by mainstream education. You'll help them rediscover a love for learning, build self-esteem, and develop crucial life skills. Small Class Sizes: With a high staff-to-student ratio, you have the time and resources to provide truly personalized education. You can get to know each student on an individual level and tailor your teaching to their specific needs. Professional Growth: SEMH education requires a unique skill set. You will develop advanced skills in behavior management, de-escalation techniques, and differentiated instruction that are highly valuable in any educational setting. Rewarding Connections: You will build strong, trusting relationships with students and their families. Witnessing a student's breakthrough-whether it's understanding a new scientific concept or simply engaging positively in class-is incredibly rewarding and a daily reminder of the impact you have. Collaborative Environment: You will work alongside a supportive and experienced team of professionals who share your passion. The collaborative nature of SEMH schools means you'll never be alone in facing challenges.
