SEMH Learning Mentor – Literacy Intervention Specialist – Alternative Provision – North Manchester – Step Teachers

Hours: Full-time | Mon–Fri | 8:30am–3:30pm
Contract: Temp-to-Perm opportunity
We’re working with a small alternative education provision in North Manchester that supports around 25 secondary-aged pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. The school provides a calm, nurturing and highly structured environment for young people who have experienced challenges in mainstream education. The focus is on personal development, emotional wellbeing, and targeted learning support to help each pupil achieve their full potential.
We’re looking for an SEMH Learning Mentor with a passion for improving literacy and communication skills. This role is ideal for someone who’s resilient, creative and relationship-driven, able to motivate reluctant learners and help them rediscover confidence through reading, writing and language support. You’ll make a real difference by combining academic guidance with emotional and behavioural support.
As an SEMH Learning Mentor – Literacy Intervention Specialist, you’ll:

Deliver structured literacy and reading interventions to small groups or individual students
*
Support pupils in building core literacy skills while managing behaviour and emotional needs
*
Use creative and adaptive strategies to engage learners who have fallen behind in reading or writing
*
Work closely with teachers and pastoral staff to track progress and celebrate success
*
Build strong, trusting relationships with pupils to promote confidence, focus and independence
What you’ll need:
*
Experience supporting young people with SEMH or behavioural needs (minimum 3 months)
*
An understanding of literacy interventions, reading support & assesments.
*
Patience, empathy and excellent communication skills
*
A calm and positive approach to supporting emotional regulation and engagement
