Teaching Assistant (TA)
Location: Near Cambridge area (specialist SEMH setting)
Contract type: Full-time / Part-time considered
Salary: £20,000 – £23,000 per annum
About the Role
The CatchUp Academy is looking to appoint one or more dedicated Teaching Assistants (TA) to join our team supporting learners aged 7-18 with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. As a TA, you will play a crucial role in helping create a therapeutic, nurturing environment where every student can thrive.
As a TA with us, your responsibilities will include:
*
working alongside teachers and other professionals to deliver individualised learning programmes
*
supporting small groups (4-6 pupils) to ensure each student’s educational and emotional needs are met
*
helping adapt classroom materials and learning resources under teacher guidance
*
contributing to outdoor learning, sensory trail or similar activities
*
supporting students’ communication, interaction, cognition and learning needs
*
assisting with the wellbeing, safety and inclusion of all students
We are expecting our TA to be compassionate, patient, creative, and resilient. Prior experience in SEMH, special educational needs, or similar supportive roles is highly desirable, though full training will be provided. As a TA, you’ll need excellent interpersonal skills, ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team, and commitment to helping learners develop confidence, skills and independence.
About the School Setting
You will be working in a school set in spacious private grounds, providing a calm, therapeutic environment. The setting includes a variety of specialized learning spaces: science, computing, music, drama, art/DT, plus outdoor areas such as forest school, sensory trail, sports pitch and conservation area. Class groups are small, enabling the TA to build genuine relationships with students, support them closely, and tailor support to individual and group needs. The culture is caring, inclusive and ambitious: all staff, including Teaching Assistants, are integral to ensuring that pupils not only achieve academically (GCSEs, functional skills, vocational qualifications) but also grow socially, emotionally and in resilience.
Location
The role is based near Cambridge (within reach for commuting from surrounding towns). Although not in central city, the location is easily accessible by road, with a tranquil setting which supports outdoor learning and holistic student development.
About The CatchUp Academy
At The CatchUp Academy, we believe every learner deserves the chance to fulfil their potential. We specialise in supporting young people who find traditional schooling challenging, particularly those with SEMH needs, neurodivergent profiles, anxiety, or additional learning differences. Our mission is to close gaps in education, rebuild confidence, and provide high-quality, personalised learning in an environment where respect, care and wellbeing come first.
As part of our team, every TA is valued as a key professional, contributing to life-changing work: shaping both academic outcomes and emotional growth. We invest in training and development, encourage reflective practice, and believe in supporting our staff just as much as our students.
What We’re Looking For
*
A qualified or experienced Teaching Assistant, or someone with similar relevant background in SEMH / Special Education / pastoral roles
*
Ability to adapt resources and learning approaches to individual needs
*
Strong communication skills (with pupils, staff, possibly parents/carers)
*
Commitment to supporting both academic progress and social/emotional growth
*
Collaborative mindset; willingness to contribute as a TA in team planning, safeguarding, behaviour management etc.
