SEMH Learning Support Assistant – Alternative Provision

A specialist SEMH Alternative Provision in Harlow is seeking a dedicated Learning Support Assistant / Behaviour Mentor to join their team. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with experience supporting young people with SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) needs, SEBD, EBD, or ASD, particularly those who may display challenging behaviours.
The provision supports pupils who have been excluded or are at risk of exclusion from mainstream education, providing a safe, structured and supportive learning environment where students can re-engage with education and achieve positive outcomes.
About the Role
As a Learning Support Assistant / Behaviour Mentor, you will support students both in and out of the classroom, helping them manage behaviour, engage with learning, and develop positive coping strategies.
You will work closely with teachers and the wider pastoral team to support students through highly personalised learning plans and tailored interventions.
Students range primarily across secondary age groups, although abilities and learning needs may vary.
Key Responsibilities
Supporting students with SEMH and behavioural needs in lessons and during interventions
Building positive and trusting relationships with pupils and staff
Assisting teachers in delivering engaging learning activities aligned with the curriculum
Supporting or covering lessons when required
Helping students regulate behaviour and develop social and emotional skills
Contributing to individual education plans and behaviour strategies
Monitoring and assessing student progress
Liaising with external professionals, including social workers, educational psychologists, and therapists
The Ideal Candidate Will Have
Experience supporting children or young people with SEMH, EBD, SEBD, ASD or mental health needs
Strong behaviour management skills
Experience working in primary, secondary, SEN or alternative provision settings
The ability to build rapport with students who may be disengaged from education
Confidence supporting small groups or covering lessons when required
A patient, resilient and proactive approach
Team Teach or MAPA training (desirable but not essential)
A current Child & Adult DBS on the Update Service
