Teaching Assistant (SEMH Support)
Location: Southampton, Hampshire
Contract Type: Full-Time, Temporary to Permanent
Salary: £88.95 - £105 per day
Start Date: September 2025
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Teaching Assistants to join schools across Southampton and Hampshire working closely with students who have Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs. This is a rewarding opportunity for someone who is passionate about making a positive difference in the lives of young people who face challenges in their educational and personal journeys.
As a Teaching Assistant, you will work under the guidance of teaching staff and the SENCo to support students in the classroom and in small group or one-to-one sessions. You will play a vital role in helping students develop their emotional regulation, confidence and learning skills, enabling them to thrive within the school environment.
Key Responsibilities
Provide tailored support to students with SEMH needs, both in class and through targeted interventions.
Assist with the planning and delivery of individual education and behaviour support plans.
Build positive, trusting relationships with students to support their emotional wellbeing.
Work collaboratively with teachers, pastoral staff and external professionals to provide a consistent and nurturing environment.
Support the promotion of a safe, inclusive and respectful school culture.
Help manage challenging behaviours using de-escalation techniques and positive behaviour strategies.
About You
We are looking for someone who is:
Patient, empathetic and resilient, with a genuine commitment to supporting young people.
Experienced (or willing to train) in working with children or young people with SEMH or similar additional needs.
An excellent communicator with strong interpersonal skills.
Able to remain calm and solution-focused in challenging situations.
Flexible, adaptable and a proactive team player.
Desirable:
Relevant qualifications (e.g. CACHE Level 2/3 in Supporting Teaching and Learning, or equivalent).
Previous experience in a school, PRU (Pupil Referral Unit), or alternative provision setting.
