About the School
Are you an experienced and empathetic SEN teaching assistant passionate about supporting non-verbal children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)? We have a fantastic opportunity for you to join a warm, inclusive primary school in vibrant Camden Town, working 1:1 with a lovely Year 1 pupil starting this September.
The child you’ll be supporting is non-verbal and communicates using alternative methods such as PECS, Makaton, and visual timetables. They respond well to consistency, patience, and a nurturing adult who can support them emotionally, socially, and academically. The role also involves intimate care, so a caring and respectful approach is essential.
Key Responsibilities
• Provide dedicated 1:1 support throughout the school day
• Use PECS, Makaton, and visual aids to enhance communication and understanding
• Assist with structured learning activities and ensure the child can access the curriculum
• Support the child with personal care needs in a dignified and compassionate way
• Collaborate with teachers, the SENCO, and external professionals to meet the child’s individual needs
• Foster a safe, trusting, and engaging environment for learning and development
Ideal Candidate
• Previous experience supporting children with ASD, especially non-verbal pupils (essential)
• Familiarity with PECS, Makaton, and/or visual communication strategies
• Confidence with intimate care routines
• Calm, compassionate, and patient nature
• Team player with a flexible, proactive attitude
