Job Description

Job Title: SEN Tribunals Officer Location: Local authority based in Lewes Pay rate: £430 per day (Umbrella) Contract Length: 3-month contract (possibility of extension) Working Pattern: Full Time, Monday - Friday, 37 hours- Hybrid working available ASAP Start Job Purpose: The role of SEN Tribunals Officer works as part of the Tribunals Team to defend Local Authority decisions before the Special Educational Needs and Disability Tribunal (SENDIST). The SEN Tribunals Officer will be the formal representative of the Local Authority for any cases that progress to oral hearings. Job Duties: Prepare cases for tribunal, liaising with Legal Services, Assessment & Planning Managers / Team Leaders and Assessment and Planning Officers, and represent the Local Authority in a legal environment. Coordinate and collate information to support the Local Authority where there is dispute about special educational needs support arrangements. Ensure all documentation linked to SEN appeals is distributed appropriately and within specified time restraints. Attend resolution meetings with parents and other professionals in an attempt to settle disputed issues without the need for formal legal redress wherever possible. Work closely with internal and external stakeholders, including parents, legal services, schools and colleges to deliver positive outcomes for children and to limit the Local Authority's exposure to risk of appeals to Tribunals. Engage with schools and other agencies to develop an awareness and understanding of the issues in relation to assessment and planning and person centred approaches. Offer coaching and training to team members to ensure consistency of approach, sharing and promoting best practice through the dissemination of statutory guidance and the learning from case studies.Person Specification: The ideal candidate must have: Knowledge and understanding of current SEN legislation and reform, statutory procedures and processes governing the provision of services for children with special educational needs. Communication skills with the ability to produce detailed correspondence and written reports on technical matters for a broad audience to ensure that key issues are identified and understood using negotiation skills Knowledge and understanding of the impact of SEND on children's educational outcomes. Ability to analyse and interpret detailed and complex information to benefit work objectives and make informed decisions under short time constraints. Ability to demonstrate sensitivity and objectivity in dealing with emotive and confidential issues.
